What happens when two art forms, the literary and the visual arts, come together? The Mauritshuis asked
for the 200th anniversary to draw inspiration from the museum's collection for 200 writers.
A selection of national and international writers, established names and up-and-coming talents, participate in this remarkable book entitled Pens about Brushes. One writer, one artwork from the Mauritshuis, 300 words per contribution – never before have so many authors been gathered in one publication. Some names: Isabel Allende, Margaret Atwood, Nicci French, Arnon Grunberg, Murat Isik, Hilary Mantel, Jan Cremer, Reggy Baaij, Connie Palmen, Sholeh Rezazadeh, Simon Schama, Donna Tartt, Tommy Wieringa and Adriaan van Dis.
The authors were allowed to decide for themselves what they wanted writing and the result are stories, poems, short reflections, drawings and even a recipe.
