The original pattern of lilies and pomegranates was available with a background of ivory, Jupiter blue, cobalt, heritage red, or charcoal. Dante Gabriel Rossetti painted no fewer than eight portraits of William Morris’ wife, Jane Morris, as Proserpine, the goddess taken by Pluto to his palace of the dead in the underworld. Jane was Rossetti’s mistress for nearly a decade, from 1865 to 1876, until Jane discovered he was addicted to the opiate laudanum. Rossetti also painted Jane as Beatrice, Pandora, and Astarte, but it was the goddess of the underworld that he returned to time and again.

Lilies have long been associated with restored innocence after death. In 1882, Morris combined these symbols in his design for Lily and Pomegranate. Morris’ design features a complex background pattern. When this design was transferred to a woodblock for wallpaper, the pattern was depicted with dots suggesting "snow," symbolizing the winter following Demeter’s loss of her daughter and Morris’ own loss of innocence with his idealized love for Jane.
