The Grand Tour was an essential experience for young men of the English upper class in the 18th century. As the culmination of their education – and to sow their wild oats – they often set off abroad, accompanied by private tutors. Italy was the ultimate destination. There they discovered the art and culture of antiquity and the Renaissance, made valuable connections, formed lifelong friendships, and sometimes had romantic adventures as well.

It was not only young men who traveled. Older gentlemen, women (with or without their husbands), and even entire families set out on their journeys, often accompanied by their dogs and an entourage of servants. Laden with luggage, these trips could last for months, sometimes even years.

Along the way, Grand Tourists bought artworks and souvenirs as tangible reminders of their travels. Some built up impressive collections, which they used to furnish their grand country houses in England.

This publication tells the story of the Grand Tour through remarkable artworks and souvenirs from the collections of three of England’s finest country houses: Holkham Hall, Burghley House, and Woburn Abbey.
